What does a home EV charger installation involve?
Three steps, in this order:
- The DB box is checked. We assess the board's capacity and tell you what it can take and what needs an upgrade, before any work begins.
- A dedicated circuit is run. The charger gets its own 32A or 40A circuit from the DB box, with the cable correctly sized and the circuit correctly earthed.
- The charge point is mounted. It goes at the right spot in your car porch or garage, on an outdoor-rated socket or charger mounting point.
Does my DB box need an upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. A DB box with spare capacity takes the EV charger circuit straight in; a full board, or one still on rewirable fuses, needs an upgrade or an extra sub-board first. In JB, older and newer homes raise different questions:
Older JB City Centre and Skudai terrace houses often still run their original electrical system, 30 to 50 years old and designed for a fraction of today's household load. Wiring of that age was never designed for a modern household load that includes an EV charger, so the board is checked first.
